Deputies were called to the 100 block of Cropp Road shortly after 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, for reports of an assault, officials say.

Upon arrival, they found an intoxicated Sean Hulburt, 24, who had allegedly escalated a verbal argument into a physical confrontation.

When deputies located Hulburt, he was lying in a pile of branches.

Investigators said his intoxication was apparent, as the smell of alcohol was "stronger than a right hook," and deputies had to assist Hulburt to his feet before placing him in handcuffs, at which point he became combative.

As deputies attempted to place Hulburt into a cruiser, he began yelling profanities at officers, bystanders, and the victim.

According to the sheriff's office, Hulburt also kicked a sergeant, prompting deputies to use a hobble restraint to secure him.

No serious injuries were reported during the incident.

Hulburt was charged with assault and battery and assault and battery on law enforcement.

He is being held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
